How my friend and fellow dietitian Danielle Omar managed to crank out an 80-recipe green smoothie book is a feat I’m not sure I could manage. Coming up with that many blender drinks built on vegetables would really stretch my culinary skills. I’m also a little envious, considering how bright and bouncy Danielle’s arteries and brain function must be after months of developing those recipes. Regardless, I’m just darn glad she did it, since the resulting resource, Super Green Smoothies, is one I’m happy to have in my home kitchen.
A Green Smoothie Routine
Danielle is actually the one who got me hooked on a regular smoothie routine in the first place. It’s a practice she prescribes as part of her Nourish program as a way to jump start healthy eating. Whenever I return from a vacation or weekend eating bender, smoothies are always how I get back on track.
Smoothie Inspiration
What I’m most looking forward to about Super Green Smoothies, is a hefty dose of inspiration. Like many of us, I find myself in a smoothie slump sometimes, routinely making the same drink over and over. Danielle’s book is full of fresh ideas using ingredients I haven’t tried in smoothies, from fennel to cabbage to collard greens. It’s also packed with solid nutrition information about the upsides of working smoothies into your diet.
A Smoothie for Every Body
I also like that the book is organized around nutrition goals. It features an entire chapter on Healthy Skin, which I’m sure my teens could get behind. I’m personally ready to dig into the Anti-Inflammatory chapter, as well as the one on Digestive Health (who else has a cranky tummy?). As for my hubby, the Energy Boosters section will be the perfect resource for his post-workout nourishment.
Easy Green Smoothie
This all brings me to today’s recipe, which happens to be from that Energy Boosters chapter. It’s called Orange Delight and is made with easy-to-find ingredients, including a whole orange, spinach, hemp seeds, and fresh ginger. It blends up into a creamy drink that will have broad appeal. I made it for myself one morning and stashed the leftovers in the fridge. It was still delicious the next day.

Rev up your morning from the inside out with this energizing smoothie. Rich in natural protein, vitamin C, and beta-carotene, it’s a delicious way to kick off the day.
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsweetened macadamia nut milk (or other favorite milk)
- 1 tablespoon hemp seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste
- 1 1/2 teaspoon peeled, grated fresh ginger
- 1 small orange, peeled and segmented
- 1/2 cup coarsely grated carrot
- 1 cup roughly chopped baby spinach
- 1/2 cup ice (optional)
Instructions

Pour the macadamia milk into the blender, then add the hemp seeds, cinnamon, and ginger.

Layer in the orange, carrot, and spinach.

Blend all the ingredients together until completely smooth, adding ice or more macadamia milk as needed to reach desired consistency.
